Stand alone and integrated automatic number plate recognition systems

Automatic number plate recognition systems from DSW

Capturing a vehicles number plate can form a crucial part of a CCTV system. Different types of camera produce significantly different results and setting up the cameras correctly is vital as vehicle number plates are one of CCTV's most challenging subjects.

DSW have years of experience setting up cameras to achieve the best results for capturing number plates. Contact us to discuss adding ANPR to your CCTV system.

What is ANPR and what can it do?

ANPR stands for automatic number plate recognition. It is the process of capturing images of number plates and using computer software to translate them into text.

ANPR can be used for

  • Automatically opening gates and barriers to specific vehicles
  • Comparing vehicles to a database
  • Keeping a log of vehicles
  • Site security

What type of camera captures a number plate?

Standard CCTV cameras

The best way to clearly capture a number plate is to have a CCTV camera dedicated to that task. A conventional camera can be set up to concentrate on an entrance way and will provide clear images of number plates during day light hours.

Dedicated number plate cameras

At night a vehicles head lights will often dazzle a standard CCTV camera as it is designed to accept as much light as possible. Dedicated number plate cameras limit the amount of light entering the camera and use infra-red to accurately control light levels. This results in a clear image of a number plate in any condition but no other detail is captured from the image. A Dedicated number plates camera is needed as part of a computerised ANPR system.
